Top winter destinations, vol. 2

Cycladia team constantly proves that Greece is a country of countless beauties and genuine destinations not only for summer, but for winter holidays too! And this is the reason why we decided to present you with the winter jewels of Greece in more than one parts.

Winter destinations in Greece

The second part for Winter Destinations is now ready to seduce you, promising that the holiday experience in anyone of those will be surely unforgettable!

Arachova Greece Parnassos

The Famous and comospolitan Arahova could not but be the first in our list…even though not an alternative choice, Arahova is surely amongst the most popular classics among winter destinations! Its picturesque villages like the homonymous Arahova, Agoriani or Delphi, the ski center with its 19 ski slopes, the world inheritance monument of Delphi Oracle, the trekking paths and a rich tradition will always make Parnassos area the must for winter holidays!

Tip: Just try the traditional local cheese “phormaela”!

Karpenisi ski centre Greece

Another popular destination for winter getaways for thousands of fanatics each year! Karpenisi could be combined, if your days can last, with Velouchi (mentioned in our previous Winter Destinations’ post). The natural scenery of the area will just enchant you! At about 100m height, with thick forests traversed by rivers, small gorges, lakes and small stone bridges, the place will surely charm even the most demanding visitor.

Tip: do not miss the local liqueurs, the traditional “katiki” cheese and the tasteful local honey

Holidays in Metsovo Greece

Within the prefecture of Ioannina, central Greece, apart from Zagoria, lies another winter heaven: Metsovo. As you are getting closer to the village and while you are wandering around the mountains of Pindos, you will be enchanted by the thick forest of firs, finding hard to believe that you are not inside an actual painting. Small lakes and gurgling rivers traverse the firs and beeches making the entire area and the National Park of Metsovo with the mountain shelters and the picturesque, imposing monasteries the perfect place for an exploration dash!

Tip: The traditional embroideries of the local community

Winter holidays in Elati

And, of course, since the mountain range of Pindos in the western Greece is the biggest one in the country, a trip there will definitely astonish you! Two of its well hidden but most exciting surprises are the scenic villages of Elati and Pertouli in Trikala prefecture. Your stay in a traditional guesthouse with fireplace, having in the background the snow-white mountain peaks and a great variety of activities such as horseback riding, rafting, mountain bike and ski in the small but well organized ski centre of Pertouli will surely compose the perfect winter escape for you and your company.

Tip: one of the best choices if you are a fan of agrotourism

Winter vacations in Greece

The natural beauty of Macedonia astounds us once more with another hot winter destination! We are talking about the mountain range of Phalakro in Drama with its exceptional ski centre at 1720m altitude and 21 ski slopes for ski fanatics. Interesting spots around include the archeological site of Philippes and the cave where the water of river Angitis springs. And of course, do not leave out trekking in the forest of Elatia.

Tip: Petrousa Gorge with its unique natural scenery

And as we are closing this winter-delight post, we realize that the options for winter holidays in Greece are just countless…how can we leave out places like Kastoria, nestled within its charming and, at the moment, frozen lake or Plastira lake near Karditsa in central Greece…

But time is our ally, so worries are out!
Our magical journey through this captivating country’s treasures has not come to its end yet!

Wow, this really opened my eyes to the possibility of travelling to Greece in the winter, not just in the summer. Looks fabulous, would be an interesting way to avoid the tourist masses and experience the country in an authentic way too.
