In 4th century BC the Asclepions Sanctuaries in Greece practiced a similar form of spiritual healing. In order to be admitted in these asylums patients, had to go through “katharsis”, a series of cleansing baths, purgations and diet formulas they had to follow for a number of days in order to be purified. Only then they were allowed to take part in the Asclepian rites, the prayers and offerings to Asclepius, the Divine Physician, until they were eventually transferred to the Abaton chamber, the “dream room” so as to receive the healing dream from the God.
The Asclepions created the concept of a healing retreat, a sanatorium of natural cure, today’s health spa.
